Responsibilities

- Manage and coordinate all Nunatsiavut-led Northern Contaminants Program research projects and support all funded projects in the Nunatsiavut region.
- Develop and carry out effective ways to communicate to Labrador Inuit about information on contaminants, contaminant related issues and new data and project results as appropriate.
- Liaise with other Inuit regions and First Nation communities nationally and within the circumpolar network regarding contaminant issues.
- Advocate the importance of continued access to country foods by Inuit and identify ways to facilitate access to country foods at community level, while collaborating with other departments within the Nunatsiavut Government
- Support and coordinate the research and remediation of the former military sites at Hopedale and Cut-Throat Island, liaising with consultants, the Provincial Government, the Hopedale and Rigolet Inuit Community Governments and Hopedale and Rigolet residents.
- Advise the Director of Environment on contaminant concerns of Nunatsiavummiut, and assist in the development of work plans to address these concerns.
- Assist in emerging Environment Division files related to environmental contaminants (i.e. environmental effects monitoring and environmental assessment of major development in the region).
- Coordinate and Chair the Nunatsiavut Contaminants Committee.
- Represent Nunatsiavut Government on the Northern Contaminants Program Management Committee and the Nunatsiavut Government Research Advisory Committee
- Represent Nunatsiavut Government on the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme
- Advise Inuit Research Advisor of ongoing contaminant related research.
- Responsible for writing proposals and annual reports.
- Working with Nunatsiavut Government communications, prepare and distribute regular communication products regarding contaminants
- Work with and collaborate with other organizations.
- Liaise with Inuit communities and Researchers from other organizations.
- Prepare, monitor and ensure the accountability of the annual NCP budget for Nunatsiavut.
- Work flexible hours when required to.
- Training as required
- Travel within Nunatsiavut, Canada and internationally
- Other duties as required
Qualifications
- Degree in area of Environmental Science, Health and Social Sciences and/or equivalent work
- 5-10 years of related experience. Combination of education and/or experience will be considered
- Demonstrate good oral, interpersonal, written communication and organizational skills.
- A demonstrated aptitude for the natural sciences, and an ability to communicate technical concepts to a wide audience.
- Must be an innovative, creative individual with a positive attitude.
- Working knowledge of MS Word/Excel/Windows and PowerPoint.
- Experience working with office equipment.
- Knowledge of Inuit Culture and Inuit Communities.
