Responsibilities

  • Establish and develop working relationships with CSSD staff and the affiliated partners
  • Work as part of a casework planning team in an effort to support Inuit children and families; this includes taking a lead role in developing a Cultural Connection Plan for children in care of a Manager, CSSD
  • Work to ensure a least intrusive approach to services are available to Inuit children and families by
    • Supporting family cohesion and family reunification
    • Supporting a ‘Kinship Care’ approach for all children requiring placement and before any court related care is explored
    • Advocating for least intrusive measures 
  • Work to support Inuit self-determination and the right to culturally competent services.
  • Conduct specific duties related to court hearings as contained in the CYCP Act 
    • Notice of time and place of court hearing regarding a child not removed from parental care where an application is filed by CSSD for a Protective Intervention Hearing 
    • Notice of time and place of a court Presentation Hearing when a child has been removed from parental care
    • Notice of the time and place of a court hearing as relates to the expiration of a supervision order or a temporary custody order
    • Notice of time and place of any court hearing relating to Continuous Custody of a child – application, transfer or termination of Continuous Custody Order
    • Making application for Standing in any Court hearing under the CYCP Act as relates to an Inuit child
    • Receiving and following up on Significant Measures, served by CSSD
  • Maintain all case files in the required format with due regard to confidentiality
  • Maintain other administrative records and documents as required by NG
  • Travel to Nunatsiavut 
  • Represent the Nunatsiavut Government on local, regional, provincial and federal working groups as required 
  • Other duties as required
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Social Work Degree and eligibility for Registration with the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Social Workers with a minimum of 5 years clinical experience
  • Knowledge of the CYCP Act and CSSD Protection and In-care Procedure and Policy Manual; and history of child welfare interventions within Indigenous communities, particularly the impacts of colonial practices such as residential schools
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to connect with families and others in an engaging and empowering manner
  • Demonstrated desire to help families facing various challenges and the ability to help connect them to Elders, Extended Family, Community and other Supports
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy in an environment where there is complex client/family needs and demands. This includes experience in setting priorities and maintaining critical path timelines
