Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Environmental Assessment Manager, the Environmental Specialist will participate in the review of environmental impacts of projects and initiatives in or impacting Nunatsiavut, including the implementation and application of the Nunatsiavut Environmental Protection Act. This will include permit and land use application reviews, as well as direct involvement in environmental reviews from all jurisdictions.

  • Lead the Nunatsiavut Government’s current spill response efforts, and support the development of a Nunatsiavut Spill Response Strategy.
  • Review permit applications received from other divisions of the Nunatsiavut Government or those received from provincial or federal departments.
  • Assist in conducting the environmental reviews of initiative under the Nunatsiavut Environmental Protection Act.
  • Assist with the Nunatsiavut Government’s participation in federal and provincial environmental assessments that affect Inuit or Labrador Inuit Lands, notably by reviewing EA documents and drafting comments.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of community and regional research studies and projects to promote environmental protection and sustainable development.
  • Assist in the development or review of regulations associated with the Nunatsiavut Environmental Protection Act and its continued implementation and operation.
  • Assist in the day-to-day operations for environmental protection and sustainable development
  • Other duties as required.

 

Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in biology, environment or a related field with 3-5 year of relevant experience. Combination of relevant training and/or experience will be considered. 
  • Ability to write, review and understand technical documents, reports, and applications
  • Ability to communicate effectively with persons of a wide variety of backgrounds and skills, including community members, government employees, and industry representatives
  • Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills
  • Organizational and analytic skills
Assets
  • Bilingual in Inuktitut and English.
  • Certificate in CPR and First Aid.
