Responsibilities

  • Provide trauma-informed support to Inuit victims of crime based on individual, family, and community needs
  • Assist victims in developing individualized healing or wellness plans and assist in implementing/delivering the wellness plans
  • Provide ongoing follow up to victims who are engaged in wellness plans
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the NG DHSD Justice Services as needed, such as the Reintegration and Support Case Manager and the Sexual Violence Prevention and Outreach Counsellor, as well as other community staff of NG DHSD, such as Mental Health and Addictions Workers, Community Health Workers, Team Leaders, Family Services, etc.
  • Help individuals and families process trauma through culturally appropriate ways, such as storytelling, time on the land, or guidance from Elders
  • Organize and facilitate community-based healing circles or community gatherings in collaboration with other community supports and/or Elders where victims, families, and community members can share experiences and promote collective healing in a safe, respectful way
  • Help victims express their needs and voice throughout court processes, and support them before, during, and after court processes
  • Work with justice-related service providers and community service providers to develop restorative justice committees to support processes that seek to repair harm
  • Connect victims to traditional supports such as by facilitating access to Elders, traditional healers, and land-based activities as part of the healing journey
  • Support integration of Inuit knowledge and healing into individual recovery plans
  • Refer victims to other services as needed for their overall wellness and healing, such as mental health, housing, income support, and other services as needed. This would include both formal supports, such as Victim Services NL, Adult Probation, RCMP, as well as informal supports, such as family and community members of victims, Elders, and community members with traditional knowledge.
  • Deliver community education and awareness about violence, impacts of violence, colonial trauma, and the importance of healing, as well as victim-related services and supports
  • Willingness to attend/complete relevant training in areas such as trauma-informed care, justice processes, victim services, self care practices and coping skills
  • Attend training and in-service training as needed
  • Travel as required
  • Other related duties as required
Qualifications
  • Diploma in Human Services, Social Work, Mental Health and Addictions, or a related field. A combination of experience and education will be considered

  • 1-3 years experience with social services, corrections, or community advocacy, particularly in Inuit communities

  • Strong listening, communication, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work independently, as well as effectively as a team player
