Responsibilities

  • Act as a liaison between Inuit offenders, their families, home communities, legal counsel, and service providers.
  • Develop and deliver culturally relevant programming to Inuit in the Labrador Correctional Centre and provide cultural related support to Inuit in other provincial correctional facilities.
  • Facilitate communication between inmates and legal counsel around court matters.
  • Provide oneonone and group supportive interventions, including talking/sharing circles.
  • Maintain files, prepare monthly reports, and participate in relevant meetings and committees.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Nunatsiavut Government Justice team and correctional staff to ensure safety, planning, and appropriate supports.
Qualifications
  • Diploma in Human Services, criminal justice, psychology, or a related field. A combination of experience and education will be considered.
  • 1-3 years of experience with social services, corrections, or community advocacy, particularly in Inuit communities
  • Knowledge and training in trauma-informed approaches (i.e. Crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with inmates, correctional staff, and community members and stakeholders
  • Knowledge and understanding of the legal system and specific challenges faced by Inuit
  • Cultural competence (deep understanding of Inuit culture, traditions, and language)
Assets
  • Bilingual in Inuktitut and English
  • Knowledge and training in neuro-differences (i.e. FASD, ADHD)
  • Strong advocacy skills to support the needs and rights of Inuit inmates
  • Empathy and compassion, ability to provide emotional support to Inuit inmates
  • Flexibility and adaptability, ability to work in a challenging and dynamic environment
