Responsibilities

  • Provide support and act as a resource, as required, for healthcare providers and other staff members, regarding the provision of culturally safe care. 
  • Identify and address power imbalances inherent in systems by education, consciousness raising and understanding of the unique social determinants of health of Inuit, and the ways power and privilege impact the health. 
  • Identify the risks associated with health inequity and develop strategies to address systemic issues to foster culturally safe care. 
  • Review and provide input regarding health policies at the community, regional and provincial level that create barriers, challenges for equal access to health care for Labrador Inuit. 
  • Document practice issues and work with health authority and service providers to and health care facilities to improve practice 
  • Participate in committees at the regional, provincial and national level that will lead to the improvement of health services for Inuit. 
  • Promote health care environments free of racism and discrimination, where people feel safe and receive appropriate care. 
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with key partners and stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate information flow and identification of issues; presents and advocates the NG’s position at various forums 
  • Prepare briefing notes, submissions, discussion papers, presentations, briefing notes, and correspondence, as required.
Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in a health, social science, political science, public policy or related field with a minimum of 5 years related experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with Inuit communities and organizations. Lived experience and/or extensive knowledge of Inuit values, culture, customs and traditions.
  • Experience or knowledge of the provincial systems (health, justice, CSSD) and community-based resources within the region.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and application of cultural safety and competency within provincial systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Canadian colonization, Indigenous specific racism and its impact on the current health and wellness of Indigenous peoples.
